A Genetic Cure for Blight That Caused Irish Famine Found

By | Last Updated On: February 16, 2021 @ 7:50 am

Shane O’Brien from irishcentral said that Researchers from The Sainsbury Lab in the UK and Wageningen University & Research in the Netherlands have discovered a new gene that appears to provide potatoes with resistance against the disease that devastated Ireland in the 19th century.

Scientists found the gene in the Solanum americanum plant, which appears to offer protection against all races of potato blight (Phytophthora infestans).

Resistance genes work by allowing pathogenic microorganisms access to the plant and then activating defense mechanisms against them.
